Preparing for your Newborn Session

Your baby is finally in your arms and you are preparing for your newborn session! Congratulations! A newborn session is the perfect way to preserve all of your baby’s tiny features, and to celebrate the little life that is added to your family! Here are a few tips to help your newborn session go as smoothly as possible:

1. Make sure the baby is warm and fed.

Try to feed your baby right before your photographer gets to your home, that way, the baby is content and sleepy during the session. Another way to keep your baby content is to make sure it is nice and warm in your home. We will probably be undressing your baby at some point, and they will get cold if they only have a diaper on!

2. Prep your home.

When I come to your home for your session, we will probably be using several different rooms. It is a good idea to clean up those rooms so there are not messes or clutter in the background. DO NOT feel like your home needs to be clean and spotless, but a cleaned up home will give the illusion of a spotless home in pictures! Some specific areas would be: nightstands, changing tables, cribs, coffee tables, dressers, etc.

3. Prep the family.

Get everyone in the know about the photoshoot — especially husbands! Let Dad know that we will need his help during the session, even though he won’t be in front of the camera for longer than 30 minutes! If you have other children, we will need his help to keep them entertained and clean while it is not their turn in front of the camera.

4. Wardrobe!

The fun part! For moms - I recommend white or very neutral colors! The color that you wear could cast a hue on the baby's face in photographs since you will be very close to each other for most of the session! Avoid prints. You will have access to my client wardrobe, so feel free to reach out anytime before your session to set up an appointment to try dresses on at my home. For dads and other children, I recommend neutrals that compliment moms outfit. For babies, they can wear whatever you want! Onesies, diaper covers, basic newborn outfits, swaddles, etc. I do recommend at least one outfit be very simple as we want to capture your precious baby’s features and not just their outfit! Prepare 1-2 outfits for mom and baby in case of spit up or blow outs!
